Oxitec

Case Study: Oxitec

Included: Squarespace website design, photography, videography

Despite living just a short drive away from their Milton Park offices, I had never heard of Oxitec and the ground-breaking technology that they produce. Oxitec is a company that specialises in using insects to target and control pest populations. In layman’s terms, Oxitec produces insects which can find and mate with other wild insects to produce male-only offspring, thus slowly declining the population of the target pest, without affecting any other wildlife, as is such when pesticides are used.

Their technology is particularly effective when used against mosquitos, as it is only the females that bite. Their “friendly” strain of Aedes aegypti is being used to fight the invasive dengue-spreading mosquito in Brazil and the Florida Keys, and they are about to begin a pilot program for their Anopheles stephensi, which is a carrier of Malaria, in Djibouti.

Oxitec needed a quick redesign of their website and had their sights set on Squarespace as their CMS of choice due to the strength of other Squarespace websites, and the ease of which they can be updated.

While the site began as a simple 5-page website, it grew as the company did, and now is a fully comprehensive portfolio for the business, as well as being translated into Portuguese.

Since the launch of the site, we also launch three additional sites to support Oxitec’s pilot programs in the Florida Keys, California and Djibouti.

I have also produced five videos for Oxitec, with support from videographers around the world. Shoutout to my friends and collaborators Ryan Quarterman, Felipe Scaldini, and Justin Broderick
